Driver's Licenses - 800-950-1682
New residents must obtain a Maryland license from a Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) office within 30 days of relocation. To get a license, you must pass a vision test and provide a birth certificate, valid out-of-state license, and social security card. A new license requires a written test, a driving exam and a $30 fee. Cost for a replacement is $10; for a renewal, $20.

Car Registration
A car must be inspected in Maryland within 30 days of purchase or arrival. The title, name of insurer, and policy number are required. There's a charge for cars previously registered out-of-state (5 percent of the value); if the tax in that state is less than Maryland's the fee is at least $100 for a 1991 or newer vehicle. The title charge is $15. An emissions test costs $12 at area testing stations, and is required to register a 1977 or newer vehicle. The MVA sends notices when cars are due for a test and issues new tags every two years at a cost of $35-48.50 a year, depending on vehicle weight.

Boat Registration - 410-260-8200
Only motorized boats require registration. Call or pick up an application form at a regional service center. New boats need a certified bill of sale and a certificate of origin from the manufacturer. Previous registration or title must be provided for boats purchased out-of-state.
